Helping Women In Guatemala Become Self Sufficient

Our third day was spent helping women and daughters in Guatemala build garden boxes.  There is a guy from Provo, Utah and his young family that have lived there for 6 years and started a foundation that teaches the women to be self sufficient.  They go to classes and earn garden boxes and then plants and are taught how to take care of them, so that they can help sustain life.  The people are so malnourished there and are just tiny.

The men put up chicken wire around them to keep animals out and us women helped them use a drill and plant plants.  It was so fun to meet some of the women and children.  The women work so hard for what they have.  The men don't give them money usually and are abusive a lot of the time.  I wanted to bring them all home.  They cooked us a big meal and we sang to them and they sang to us.  They served us sweet bread for a treat when the work was done and a drink like postum.  This was my favorite day of all and it was also mine and Jayson's 25th wedding anniversary.  One we will never forget.
They already had corn planted.  This is
a very tall corn different from ours.
They use it to make tortillas everyday.

Shauna, Russ, Jayson, Shaun, Melinda, Jayden, and I
helping.  I loved these women and children.

Corn fields.

Driving through town to get to the villages.

Shawna hanging out with some boys in front of their home.

It rained a lot today and there was a bit
of a mud slide.  This is their winter season
and they get rain.  It was still warm though.
There was a huge down pour today and
we saw a wild long horn sheep just
standing out in the pouring rain.  I wish
I would have gotten a picture.
